When: October 5-7, 2018
In October 2018 the International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada will team up to host the eighth annual World Girls’ Hockey Weekend. This event aims to celebrate and grow the Female Game from coast to coast and unite Canadians through grassroots programming that is led by local communities, MHAs and families.
The variety of events are endless for groups or individuals to get involved. From girls and women trying out the sport for the first time to just a simple celebration of the game, Canadians from coast to coast are encouraged to take part and register their event with Hockey Canada. Women’s hockey is the fastest growing game in Canada, let’s keep the momentum going and utilize this opportunity to educate and motivate our players, coaches, volunteers and supporters.
Dozens of countries across the globe will also be participating in the weekend as each puts their celebration efforts on display. As the world leader in the sport, World Girls Hockey Weekend is our chance to put our stamp on the female game and show the rest of the world what Canadians are capable of. This October 5-7, let’s have a cross-Canada celebration heard around the world!
The new female Skills Surge will be the largest skill-development event in the world! Hockey Canada invites all Canadians, including minor hockey associations, communities, teams, families and everyone in between to host their own skills session anytime over World Girls’ Hockey Weekend and join the festivities!
Going beyond the ice, Hockey Canada has prepared practice plans for the following components:
To support those that decide to host a skills session, all practice plans and event details can be found on the Hockey Canada Network app, right in the palm of your hand. The host of the event will download the app in order to access the information, and will receive push notification updates as World Girls’ Hockey Weekend approaches.
For the 2018 World Girls’ Hockey Weekend, we will have a new participant gift - the WGHW buff. Once a host registers their event and downloads the Hockey Canada Network app, all participants, including staff, will receive the gift (shipped direct to the host).
Hockey Canada will track all registered events on an interactive map found on the World Girls’ Hockey Weekend website. All hosts are encouraged to take part in social media throughout the weekend, sharing photos and videos of their event using the event hashtags: #WGIHW.
